Pacific Navigator
by Johnny Turner
The form is that of a sail or rudder referencing navigation, migration and moving forward to the future.
60-80 million years ago this stone was formed as limestone created from the calcium-carbonate remains of ancient shells, birds, fish and micro sea-life. Pressed together and heated by fault plate activity it then morphed into marble and rose up out of the sea as New Zealand /Aotearoa.
It was quarried ca1900 at Kairuru, Takaka Hill and used as building stones for Maritime House in Wellington Harbour, where it stood for 100 years before its demolition, and recycling into this form.
Its base stone is green/blue andesite stone from Te Aroha/Thames. The 'pin' is 16mm marine stainless steel.
