ART AUCTION
Unique, bequeathed artworks to be auctioned — including a vintage Morris Minor decorated with metal roses
Taupo Sculpture Trust was recently bequeathed a large collection of artwork from collector, Gilli Sutton.
The entire collection of more than 50 pieces, will be individually auctioned through Trade Me under the seller name ‘tauposculpture’ to raise money for the Trust. The artworks have been split into categories (stone, ceramic, metal and wood) which will be auctioned off throughout the next month, commencing with stone artworks this Saturday October 26. One of the key pieces in the collection is ‘Parlez Lentement’, a vintage Morris Minor covered in metal roses. This statement piece will also go to auction on Saturday 26th. Created by New Zealand artist Niko Thomsen, ‘Parlez Lentement’ was originally purchased from the Waikato Sculpture Trust by Gilli.
Thomsen has fond memories of Gilli. “Gilli was such an inspiring person and it felt that there could be no better place in the world for my artwork. With her purchase she had brought so much happiness into my life and that of my young family,” Thomsen says.
Gilli was a huge supporter of the arts and her intention was for the artwork to be sold to raise funding for the Trust. All money raised from these auctions is going towards a major artwork that will be a legacy for the Taupo community.
“Thanks to the generosity of Gilli, we will be one step closer to seeing our vision come to life.” Kathy Johnston, Chair of the Trust says.
The Taupo Sculpture Trust is dedicated to providing contemporary sculptures for public spaces around the Great Lake, to enhance the urban environment and to further support the creative arts in New Zealand.
